Collection: Electromagnets

Permanent Magnets Ltd. (PML) has engineered electromagnets and electro-permanent magnets since 1960 — wound, rated and tested in-house for exact, repeatable holding force, not bought in from a third party and relabelled.

Every unit on this page uses electric current to control its grip, but not all of them the same way. If you're not sure which behaviour your application needs, the guide below explains the difference in plain terms.

Electromagnets

Grip only while current flows. Energise the coil and it holds at its rated force; cut the power and it releases instantly. Simple, direct control — but the load drops the moment power is lost.

Best for: pick-and-place, feeders, sorting lines — anywhere you want the part to drop the instant power is cut.

Electro-Permanent Magnets

Hold with a permanent magnet — no continuous power, no heat, no risk of dropping the load in a power cut. A brief electrical pulse is needed only to switch the grip on or off.

Best for: CNC/machining workholding, robotic lifting, and anywhere a power failure must never mean a dropped part.

Our range includes the Mini Electromagnet, Energize-to-Hold and Energize-to-Release configurations, Electro-Permanent Magnetic (EPM) Chucks for CNC and machining workholding, and the Electro-Permanent Magnetic Lifter for robotic and CNC pick-and-place — every unit wound and rated in-house for exact, repeatable performance.
