A cow magnet (also called a cattle magnet) is a smooth cylindrical magnet given orally to cattle to collect and hold tramp iron (nails, staples, baling wire) swallowed while grazing, preventing the metal from puncturing the stomach wall and causing Hardware Disease, also known as Traumatic Reticuloperitonitis.

At about six months old, calves stop suckling and begin to graze — and grass is not the only thing they pick up. Grazing cattle swallow dangerous tramp iron: nails, staples, baling wire. Left unprotected, that metal causes "Hardware Disease" (Traumatic Reticuloperitonitis): cows lose appetite, dairy cows drop milk output, feeder stock stops gaining weight, and severe cases end in serious stomach inflammation and death.
